I know the struggle

For 20-years, my anxiety was so severe, I was terrified to leave my house. When I had to leave, I would usually have panic attacks. I would have them if I was stuck in traffic and some of the worst attacks I had, occurred when I had to use an escalator or lift.

I can still feel the emotions that were triggered whenever I was in a meeting and someone shut the door. Immediately I felt trapped and thoughts of either being sick or losing control of my bowels would consume me mentally. At times, feeling mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted from the constant battles I was having, I’d take myself to an open space – praying for a break from the non-stop attacks.

I hoped being out in the open, would end the pain I constantly felt around my chest – it was like a weight lifter crushing me, making it impossible for me to breathe normally.

But in these so-called ‘open’ spaces the anxiety would violently attack me. I would feel trapped, experiencing sheer terror as my mind created frightening thoughts.

  •  “What if you can’t control your anxiety?”
  • “What if you lose control?”
  • ​“What if you shit yourself?”
  • ​“What will people think?”
  • ​“Will the people at work find out?”
  • ​“What happened to you?”
  • ​“Why can’t you be normal, like before?”
And these thoughts would continue long after I’d left the open space. They would include having absolutely horrible thoughts about my self-worth.

No matter how many doctors, psychologists or other ‘therapist-type people’ I visited, no one could give me the one thing that I needed to end my anxiety.

I spent years searching for the answer
They say that you’ll spend your last dollar to find a cure for a health issue and that was definitely true for me.

I spent years reading about anxiety, stress, depression and fear. This was back in the days when there was immense stigma attached to anyone with a mental health issue like anxiety.’ 

My anxiety took a toll on my marriage; and I ended up divorced.
